The Identity Lab: Support Group for Mixed Race and Multiracial Teens
For mixed race teens seeking a safe space to explore identity conflicts and find liberation—no more choosing between self and world.
The Identity Lab is an 8 week support group where teens with mixed race and multiracial heritage can foster a safe, affirming space to explore and express their mixed race identities, reduce isolation, build community, and reduce feelings of isolation.
Everyone has advice for your teen on being mixed race:
“Just identify with whatever you look like.”
“You don’t look mixed.”
“Don’t take up space from others with less privilege.”
“You aren’t ____ enough, you’re just half.”
“Make sure to call out racism with your privilege”
“If you look white, you can’t claim being an ethnic minority”
“Stop making being mixed your whole personality.”
As a parent you may not be aware your mixed race teen hears things like this… but I assure you they do and they are sick of it.
But instead of getting mad at everyone, they:
Try to please others to belong and it doesn’t always work
Feel some confusion on the “right” way to identify as a mixed race person
Still have to put up with teasing or straight up bullying
Wonder if they might have social anxiety because new groups always come with questions and stares
Are hyperaware of everyone’s looks and body language
Feel like no one understands what they’re going through
Feel alone or lonely
Feel like they’ve experienced enough rejection and negativity
Feel like they code-switch too much
Feel like they’d rather hide and not stand out
Are pretty sure their self-esteem is being impacted by all they are putting up with
The Identity Lab is the place to go to find solidarity, make it all make sense and begin fighting back against the limits and expectations of fitting in “a box.”
With the support of other mixed race teens in The Identity Lab support group, your teen will:
Learn practical coping strategies and skills to manage racial microaggressions
Understand why society’s oppressive racial structure isn’t their problem and learn to navigate the world with more flexibility and understanding
Gain confidence in processing and expressing emotions related to identity and the mixed race experience within a supportive environment
Break free from loneliness, isolation and hiding who they are and improve relationships with teachers and parents.
Find healing from racial trauma endured by family, friends, teachers and strangers
Develop more interest in and energy for socializing with peers and in new groups
Nurture self-esteem and confidence and develop a clearer focus on their future
Discover how to create space to honor all of who they are
Experience more peace, calm and sense of purpose around their racial identity
Help your teen stop feeling small and unseen.

While facilitated by a licensed psychologist, this group is a support group, not a therapy group. It focuses on peer support and identity exploration rather than clinical treatment.

Confidentiality is a cornerstone of the group. Participants agree to keep shared information private. However, as a mandated reporter, Dr. Jenn will make sure parents and teens in the group understand the limits of said confidentiality, especially as it pertains to the safety and well-being of group members.

To maintain a safe space for teens, sessions are closed to parents. Parents can request individual consultations if needed.
